Editor: This is Bela Lyon Pratt's bas-relief of Collis Potter Huntington. It's an interesting object, especially the way the bronze material gives it such a strong presence. What can you tell me about it? Curator: Notice how the bronze medium inherently links this commemorative plaque to industry and capital. The memorialization process, through material choice and dedicatory inscription, literally solidifies Huntington's legacy within the built environment. Do you think that the work reveals more about Huntington or the society that revered him? Editor: That's a great question. I hadn't considered the societal aspect, but that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for pointing that out! Curator: Considering the era, the bronze also speaks to the means and modes of production prevalent in Pratt’s time. I am glad to have had the chance to help.
