Curatorial notes

Editor: This small, untitled print by Melchior Küsel depicts a classical scene with arches and columns. It feels almost dreamlike in its precise detail. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see an echo of grandeur, even in miniature. The architecture itself—the arches, the columns—evokes a sense of enduring power and the weight of history. Look at how the figures are placed, almost as afterthoughts. Do they challenge or reinforce that power? Editor: I hadn't considered the figures as a challenge. I was so focused on the architecture. Curator: The presence of those figures and foliage reminds us that even the most imposing structures are subject to the passage of time and the presence of humanity. Editor: That gives me a new perspective. I can see now that it is not just about power, but also resilience. Thanks for pointing that out.
