Giulio Romano rendered this drawing of Neptune with pen and brown ink in the 16th century. Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, stands powerfully, holding his trident, a symbol of his dominion over the waters. Consider the trident, a three-pronged spear. In its simplest form, it is a tool for fishing. Yet, in the hands of Neptune, it becomes an emblem of immense power, capable of stirring storms and quelling the seas. We can trace similar symbols of authority across cultures. Think of the thunderbolt of Zeus, or even the scepter of a king. These objects resonate with a shared human need to visualize and embody control. The dolphin at Neptune’s feet, traditionally a symbol of guidance and salvation, adds another layer. But even this benevolent creature, in its subservience, reinforces Neptune’s absolute command. The image stirs deep within us a primal recognition of power dynamics, of the delicate balance between order and chaos. These symbols transcend time, echoing in our collective memory.
