Norma Morgan made this print, Granite Tor, using a monochromatic palette and a layering of marks. The effect is a real sense of depth. I’m really drawn to the way Morgan uses the texture of the paper to create the effect of light filtering through the clouds. If you look closely at the top right corner, you can see how the sky seems to glow from within. This is the magic of printmaking – how the physical process can create something ethereal. The contrast between the solid, grounded rocks and the ephemeral sky makes you think about time, about how things change. The granite tor is timeless, the clouds suggest the passing of time. Reminds me a little of some of the landscape work of Agnes Martin, in its delicate touch. Morgan makes us think about how we see and experience the natural world. It’s an invitation to slow down, to really look.
