Hulda D. Robbins created “Piney Woods”, a color print, during a period of significant social and environmental change. Robbins, born in 1910, lived through the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and the rise of environmental awareness. These events shaped her perspective, influencing her artistic vision. In "Piney Woods", a somewhat surreal and abstracted view of nature, we might see references to the shifting landscapes of both the physical environment and society. The print's style, which simplifies natural forms into blocks of color, moves away from traditional landscape art. The trees and geological features, rendered in shades of blue, green, gray and red, convey a sense of quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to reflect on their relationship with the natural world. Hulda D. Robbins’ print captures a moment of reflection, inviting us to consider the delicate balance between nature and humanity.
