How would that apply to the Renaissance? Curator: The Renaissance witnessed a renewed interest in classical antiquity, and the satyr, a figure from Greek mythology, was re-imagined. Artists and patrons used these symbols to connect with the past, displaying their knowledge and sophistication, and tapping into deeper anxieties around humanity's place in the world. The controlled artistry, displayed by the skillful ink strokes, belies the wildness it portrays, showing the artist’s ability to tame nature, too. Editor: That makes sense. It's almost like they're wrestling with the idea of chaos and order, isn't it? Is the roughness due to the materials? Curator: The seeming roughness works here – the jagged edges, that wide, gaping mouth. These heighten the sense of primal energy, almost animalistic, that exists beneath a veneer of civilization, reflecting our dual nature. Renaissance thinkers were intensely concerned with such contradictions. Editor: I’d never considered those anxieties before, but seeing that raw, exposed mouth suddenly gives the mask a darker tone than I initially recognized.
