This is a pencil sketch for an Officer's Dining Room by Eggers and Higgins, Architects. It's fascinating to consider how these architects conceived of a space through the language of line, the cross-hatching, and the tonal variations in the graphite, it's all very descriptive. What I find compelling is the way they meticulously render the architectural details; the paneling, the door frames, the curtains, and the furniture, they build this world from pure drawing. Look at the “North” elevation. See how the weight of the curtains hanging from the pelmet is suggested with just a few, soft strokes? Or the way the chandelier is implied with a delicate web of lines? The sketch becomes not just a plan, but a dream of a space, full of texture and light, even without color. It reminds me of Piranesi's architectural fantasies. Like him, Eggers and Higgins create a tangible, yet imagined, world. Art is like that, an ongoing conversation between the real and the envisioned.
