Editor: Here we have Pino Pinelli’s "Pittura R BL," created in 1986. At first glance, it’s remarkably simple: red and black strokes dancing across the wall. It has a definite graphic quality. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Dancing is right! It makes me think of musical notes scattered on a page. I see a deliberate sparseness. There is such joy in those small dashes, a push and pull between what is present and absent. Does that make sense? I also find myself wondering about his choice of colors: fiery red, and an almost shadowy black...It's more about feeling than about something clearly representational, wouldn’t you say? Editor: I agree! The tension between those two colors is interesting. They are almost opposites, fighting for dominance. I wonder if there's a symbolic meaning behind that? Curator: Perhaps, or maybe it’s as simple as the artist enjoying the drama they create together! This work feels playful, like Pinelli is experimenting with the bare minimum needed to suggest form and movement. Almost like a painter doing line drawing, yet those are far from being lines, no? They look almost three dimensional and so very visceral. Editor: I never thought about the idea of playful experimentation, I see it now. Also, thinking of them as musical notes, I start noticing a possible tempo change as it proceeds... Curator: Aha! So it seems the music is reaching our ears too... How wonderful. I feel like this dialogue itself has shifted the tone and that the more one engages with this art the richer the possible nuances. Editor: Definitely! It’s fascinating how such a minimalist piece can spark so many thoughts and interpretations.
