Jacques Philippe Le Bas created this print, "The Battle at Oroi-jalatu," which is now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It depicts a scene from a military engagement. Reflecting on this piece, I’m drawn to consider whose stories get told in historical accounts. Battle scenes, traditionally, have celebrated military prowess and conquest, often glossing over the experiences of those most affected by conflict, like civilians and the land itself. This print invites us to think about the cultural lens through which we view history. It prompts a consideration of whose voices are centered and whose are marginalized in narratives of power and conflict. How does an artwork like this reinforce or challenge our understandings of historical events and their lasting impact?
