Johannes van Cuylenburgh created this etching of a ‘Lying Cow and Sheep’ in the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century. It’s a pastoral scene, a common subject in Dutch art, depicting farm animals in a serene landscape. This imagery reflects the economic and social structure of the time, where agriculture was central to Dutch society. Such images served to idealize rural life, celebrating the connection to the land and the importance of animal husbandry. The print was made during a period of significant social and political change in the Netherlands, as the country transitioned from the Napoleonic era towards a more modern, industrialized society. Art institutions and academies were also developing, shaping artistic styles and subjects. To truly understand this etching, we can delve into the archives of agricultural practices of the time, examining popular imagery in the Netherlands, and exploring the artist’s other works. This helps us see how the artwork engages with contemporary ideas about nature, labor, and national identity.
