Carl August Lebschee created this print, "Man beschijnt tekst op een steen met een fakkel" sometime in the 1800s. The subdued tones and detailed lines guide us through a narrative scene of a man with a torch. The stark contrast between light and shadow creates a sense of drama and mystery. The composition divides the scene into clear areas. On the left, trees create a backdrop of shadow, and on the right, the human figure becomes a point of focus. What we see in the center is a stone slab. Is it a natural formation? Or a marker? The man illuminates the surface, drawing our eye to the inscribed words. The light and shadow give a depth and texture to the stone, making the words legible. This print destabilizes the relationship between nature and text. Is the text illuminating the stone, or the stone giving meaning to the words?
