Curatorial notes
Editor: This is "Large Banana Leaf" attributed to Maruyama Okyo. It’s a substantial painting on paper. I’m struck by its size and monochrome palette. What is your take? Curator: Ah, yes! It almost feels like a whisper of nature. Okyo, or someone in his circle, captured the essence of the banana leaf with such delicate brushstrokes. What do you make of the empty space? Editor: I hadn't considered that. It creates a sense of tranquility, doesn't it? Curator: Precisely! Negative space is as important as the subject itself. I find myself drawn into a contemplative state. Editor: That’s so true! I see that now. Thanks so much!
