Pieter Barbiers created this stage design for a columned gallery with loggia using pen and watercolour. The architecture is arranged symmetrically to create a serene and ordered effect. The colonnade recedes into the distance, its strong verticals and horizontals conveying a sense of depth and formal balance. The repeated marble columns, rendered in shades of pink and grey, rhythmically structure the space. Note how Barbiers uses line and perspective to guide the eye, creating an illusion of vastness within a confined space. This manipulation of space and form connects with the theatrical function of the design, where illusion and artifice are central to the experience. The architectural precision and structured composition invite us to consider the design as more than just a backdrop. It’s an exploration of how space can be shaped and perceived, reflecting broader philosophical interests in order and perspective.
