Robert Frank’s “From the bus 69B” is a photographic artwork. It consists of a contact sheet, a direct print from a negative strip, presenting us with a series of moments captured in black and white. The nature of this piece is very interesting. Contact sheets are generally working documents. They are used by photographers to review and select images. By presenting this working document as the final artwork, Frank disrupts conventional ideas about artistic production. The images in this contact sheet are raw and unfiltered. They offer a glimpse into everyday life, capturing fleeting moments and chance encounters. Frank's use of photography challenges traditional artistic practices, elevating the ordinary to the status of art, and making visible the means of its own making. It is a reminder that art can be found in the everyday, and that the process of creation can be just as important as the final product.
