Endre Rozsda painted "Lit pour pommes," or "Bed for Apples," with oils using a light touch and a muted palette. Imagine Rozsda standing here, brush in hand, carefully layering one colour over another. I really get a sense of calm from the subdued greys and blues. Then these delicious pops of apple red and green on the table appear. Is it a real place? Is it an imagined space? The composition is intriguing, a flat plane of a table is set against an opening that could be a door. It's fascinating how Rozsda plays with shape. The apples feel like dots of feeling, organized but also slightly out of reach. The painting feels like a kind of dreamscape, where everyday objects take on a life of their own. It reminds me of Giorgio Morandi's still lifes, but with a surrealist twist. Both artists invite us to slow down and to find poetry in the everyday. What does the painting say to you?
