Here we have an untitled photograph of Sufi dervishes, made by Hippolyte Arnoux in the latter half of the 19th century. During this period, European photographers in the Middle East often documented religious practices through an Orientalist lens, framing them as exotic or mysterious. In contrast, this image presents a more intimate view. Arnoux captures a spiritual practice of the Sufi community, known for its mystical approach to Islam. The dervishes are shown here in ritual poses, which involve music and movement intended to bring them closer to the divine. Look closely and you'll see how the photograph blurs the lines between observer and observed. While it was created within a colonial context, it also serves as a personal testament to faith and community. The soft sepia tones and carefully arranged composition evoke a sense of reverence, inviting us to reflect on the diverse expressions of spirituality.
