Curatorial notes

Here is a phot-micrograph of a portion of the inner skin on coating of cerealis cells made by Robert W. Dunham. Dominating the composition is an oval shape containing various tones of blacks, greys and whites. The texture is granular and uneven. Looking at the underlying structure, the different tones coalesce into forms, giving depth to the texture. The structure of the cell, with its irregular shapes, challenges fixed meanings in science by suggesting fluidity rather than rigidity. This image encourages viewers to reconsider the boundaries between art and science by merging the precision of scientific observation with the aesthetic interpretation. This intersection destabilizes traditional categories and proposes new ways of thinking about representation and knowledge.
