Curatorial notes

Hans Holbein the Younger painted this Madonna of Burgermeister Meyer, whose date of creation is unknown, using oil on wood. We see a composition dominated by a vertical Madonna figure flanked by the Burgermeister's family. Note the use of colour; the Madonna’s dark robe is contrasted by the bright, almost lurid, red sash and gold sleeves. Holbein masterfully uses geometric shapes, with the circular fan behind the Madonna echoing the round faces and cylindrical forms of the figures. The arrangement of figures and objects into geometric patterns and symmetrical arrangements invites us to question the painting’s underlying structure. This is not merely a religious scene, but also a carefully constructed representation of social order and personal devotion. The painting presents a structured view of reality, where religious and social meanings merge, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between the sacred and the secular.
