Max Weber’s ‘Seated Figure’ is a print, and it feels like it might have been coaxed into existence, maybe through trial, error, and intuition. The colours feel like they’ve been built up, layer by layer. I wonder what it was like for him to make this print. What was he thinking? The pink that makes up the figure’s legs and torso is especially nice against the blues and greens that frame the figure. The pink is applied in such a way as to suggest some kind of depth in the image, like an echo or a shadow. It’s these textures, colours, and the way they sit on the surface that gives this print its emotional resonance. It’s always worth remembering that artists are in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas and inspiring each other’s creativity through time. Painting is like embodied expression, embracing uncertainty, and allowing for multiple interpretations.
