These two photographs of Greet and Lien Lapp in front of the Villa Rozenburg were made in 1910 by Carolina Onnen. It's fascinating how photography, much like painting, involves a process of layering – here, time, light, and the artist's intention all blend. What strikes me is the texture: the grainy, sepia-toned surface gives a tangible sense of history, almost like touching a memory. Look closely at the way the light catches the villa's facade; you can almost feel the crispness of the winter air. The transparency of the image lends a dreamlike quality, as if we're peering into a world that's both present and distant. Onnen's work reminds me a little of Eugène Atget, who documented the changing face of Paris in a similar way. Both artists captured the poetry of everyday life, finding beauty in the ordinary. And isn't that what art is all about – seeing the world with new eyes?
