John Hoyland made this print, called Yellow and Pink, with silkscreen, but without a date. It's all about embracing the fluidity of paint and the unpredictable nature of the printing process. Hoyland uses a limited palette, with the title giving you the main players, but then adds in tones of grey and white, allowing these to mix in a fluid and unpredictable way. Look at how the rectangular form in the center doesn't quite sit within its boundaries. It’s like he's saying, "Let's see what happens if we let go a little." I'm drawn to the splatters of paint around the edges of the rectangle. These feel like moments of pure chance, yet they're carefully orchestrated to create a sense of depth and movement. This reminds me of the work of Helen Frankenthaler, who explored similar ideas of spontaneity and control in her own abstract paintings. It really shows you how art is just one big conversation across time.
