Curatorial notes

This delicate drawing of a herder with six cattle was made by Johan Jakob Biedermann using graphite on paper. The pencil lines have a fineness that belies their descriptive force. Look closely, and you'll see how Biedermann coaxes a wealth of texture from this humble material. Notice the variation in the graphite strokes, from the soft shading that suggests the bulk of the animals' bodies, to the crisp, sharp lines defining their horns and hooves. Consider the physical act of drawing. Each mark involved a direct transfer of the artist's energy onto the page, a connection between hand, tool, and surface. This humble scene speaks to the economics of labor. The herder's work of caring for the livestock is captured in this straightforward image, a record of a life lived close to the land, and a challenge to traditional distinctions between fine art and the everyday.
