Romul Nutiu made this artwork called ‘Waterfall’, we don’t know when, but it’s a riot of blues, reds and whites, built up from loose gestural marks. You can almost see the artist at work, layering the paint, letting it drip and pool, and shifting the image through feeling and intuition. I like to imagine him with his brush, how he might have felt, standing in front of his canvas, trying to capture the essence of water in motion. The paint is applied in both thick and thin layers, with moments where it's almost like he’s thrown the paint at the canvas. Look at the white marks cascading down the painting. They are not just descriptive, they are full of energy. This piece seems to be in conversation with painters like Joan Mitchell and other abstract expressionists. It makes me think about how artists are always looking at each other, riffing off ideas, inspiring one another across time. Painting, at its best, is a form of expression that embraces ambiguity, allowing for endless interpretations.
