This is an undated album page of gelatin silver prints by Herman Besselaar showing scenes of Urk harbor. Each print is a little window onto a moment, but together they tell a story of boats, sailors and a sense of place. Look at the grainy texture, the way the light is caught, almost trapping the figures within the photographic emulsion. It’s like Besselaar is trying to capture not just what these places looked like, but what they felt like. It's an invitation to experience the world through Besselaar's eyes. The beauty is in the making, the decisions about composition and light, and the way he assembled this collection. It reminds me a little of the collages of Kurt Schwitters, where everyday fragments are repurposed to form something new. Like Schwitters, Besselaar shows us that art is all around us, not just in galleries, but in the way we see and arrange the world.
