Curatorial notes

Victor Jean Nicolle created this small watercolor of classical buildings from a vaulted opening. Through this archway, Nicolle presents us with symbols of permanence and power. The classical buildings are depicted with a domed structure and a high tower. But it is the arch itself that intrigues me most. Throughout history, the arch has signified triumph, transition, and the passage from one state to another. Think of the Roman triumphal arches, celebrating military victories and imperial power, structures laden with symbolism intended to evoke awe and reverence. Here, the arch acts as a frame, not only structuring the composition but also focusing our gaze, guiding us toward the classical buildings beyond. The archway invites us to consider how symbols persist, evolve, and are continually reinterpreted. This little painting becomes a meditation on history itself, a reminder that we, too, are part of a continuing story.
