Michelle Possum Nungurrayi made this painting called Women's Dancing Fire Ceremony with acrylic on canvas. The patient application of countless tiny dots and circles really captures the essence of art-making as a process. The surface is built up with layers of meaning, each mark contributing to the whole. It feels like a meditative act, each dot a breath, a moment in time. I'm drawn to the way the colors vibrate against each other, creating a lively, almost shimmering effect. The palette is earthy, warm, and inviting, punctuated by moments of brightness, like sparks in a fire. See how the artist uses the contrast between the dark, densely dotted areas and the lighter, more open spaces to create a sense of depth and movement? It reminds me of the paintings of Agnes Martin. But here the grid is organic, alive, and full of stories. Ultimately, art is about the journey, not the destination.
