This small black and white photograph, Band, convention hall--Chicago, was taken by Robert Frank sometime in the mid-twentieth century. I can almost feel the rumble of the drum. And all the in-between grey tones make me think about the magic of a dark room, Robert Frank watching his images come to life in the developing tray. The more you look at it, the more this photograph becomes abstract. I find myself thinking about the moment he pressed the shutter. Was he running, or standing still? Did he linger or move on? Maybe he saw something special in that moment. He noticed it, captured it, and now we get to notice it too. It reminds me that photography, like painting, is about seeing the world in your own way, and then sharing that vision with others. Frank's sensibility and the way he was looking at the world continues to influence how we all see.
