Jan Schüller made this photograph, titled 'Portret van Richard Müller (Dresden) en Vos, wereldtentoonstelling in St. Louis (Louisiana Purchase Exposition)', in 1904. I like how the sepia tones give a sense of history, or maybe just age! The image is framed within a larger card, which has a mottled effect, almost as if it's been aged on purpose. It's interesting to think about how the artist saw these two men, Richard Müller and Vos. Were they friends? Acquaintances? What were they thinking when they attended the World’s Fair? I find myself wondering about the conversation between artists across time and place. Someone like Schüller, working in the early 20th century, surely influenced later photographers, just as he himself was inspired by those who came before him. Each artist adds their voice to an ongoing dialogue, a continuous exchange of ideas that fuels creativity.
