This untitled painting was made in 1987 by Vasile Dobrian. I love the wobbly confidence of that looping black line, like handwriting but maybe it's a drawing. There's something so matter-of-fact about it, not too precious. The way that line interacts with the colored areas is interesting, it sits on top of a kind of sky and earth, or is it water? I can see a real process here, the paint looks matte and thick, almost like fresco and the way the colors are laid down so frankly makes me think of someone like Milton Avery, who was also so good at letting a painting be what it is. This painting really celebrates ambiguity, it doesn't need to tell a story, it's just there, and that's enough.
