Bernard Willem Wierink made this drawing, Canteclaer komt met gedode hen bij koning Nobel, at an unknown date. It's a flurry of soft color and gentle hatching that gives the feeling of a fable. Look at the muted greens, blues, and browns, laid down in short strokes; it's almost like the artist is feeling out the forms, one mark at a time. It makes me think about how process is a form of discovery, even of world-building. The central text is framed with images of animals, each rendered with such a tender touch, like the rooster at the bottom. You can almost feel the feathers. Wierink reminds me a little of Paula Modersohn-Becker, who also worked in a similar art nouveau style, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. Art is like a conversation across time. It's a way of seeing and feeling, and it invites us to bring our own stories to the table.
