This is Matthieu van Plattenberg's etching, Winterlandschap met schaatsers. Made in the 17th century, the artwork depicts a frozen landscape teeming with figures enjoying winter activities. Against the backdrop of a distant town, we see people skating, pulling sleds, and simply walking across the ice. What stories are hidden beneath the frozen surface? During the Dutch Golden Age, there was an increased focus on genre painting – scenes of everyday life – and landscape art. This etching provides a glimpse into a specific time and place, embedding social and cultural values. Notice how the artist captures the energy and community. It is a celebration of both leisure and the power of nature to transform a familiar world into a playground.
