Skaters' Island 1937

Louis Lozowick created "Skaters' Island," a lithograph, capturing a scene that reflects a collective experience during the interwar period. Lozowick, an immigrant from Ukraine, was deeply engaged with the socio-political currents of his time, especially the narratives around industrialization and urbanization. The artwork captures a frozen landscape, peopled by figures skating, which presents a moment of communal leisure amidst what was, for many, an era of economic hardship. We might consider the image through the lens of class and leisure. While Lozowick often focused on urban and industrial landscapes, here he turns to recreation, yet the muted tones and starkness evoke a sense of the everyday struggles present even in moments of play.
