With bold strokes of paint, Calder made this composition in 1967. I like how the yellow plain is brushed in, wet-on-wet, loose and free. This work is so playful and deceptively simple. I can imagine Calder approaching the blank surface, maybe with a brush full of vibrant color, making a decisive mark, and then another, each stroke building up the composition, finding a balance between the shapes and colors. He’s using the language of abstraction to evoke a sense of space and movement; the shapes seem to float and dance across the surface. It makes me think of Joan Miró. The juxtaposition of colors and forms creates a dynamic tension, inviting us to engage with the painting on a visual and emotional level. What a joyful conversation across time!
