Curatorial notes
Fujishima Takeji painted "Autumn at Versailles," at an unknown date, using oil on canvas. Takeji was a Japanese artist who integrated Western art movements into his practice, embodying a moment of cultural exchange and artistic innovation. The painting captures a fleeting scene: two women stroll through the garden, their parasols shading them from the sun. There is a strong sense of place, yet Versailles, a symbol of European aristocracy, is filtered through the lens of a Japanese artist. What does it mean to see this iconic location depicted not through a Western gaze, but through the eyes of someone from a vastly different cultural background? What do we make of the women taking a stroll, who appear to be in western dress? In his work, Takeji provides a unique view into a globalizing world, inviting us to reflect on the complexities of cultural identity, and how personal experiences shape our perceptions.
