Robert Frank shot this series of black and white photographs on film. It's interesting to see the artist's process of creating the work, and it suggests the many different outcomes that were possible. I love how Frank uses the film strips as a kind of storyboard, freezing moments, and re-arranging them for us to see. When you blow up the images, each one feels full of life – from the series of a man's hands, to the horse standing still in a snowy landscape. Frank is asking us to join him as he looks into the scene. We can think about our own practice as artists – how we make choices and decisions and edit as we make our work. Frank’s eye, here, is a reminder that artmaking is always an experiment. The artist is in an ongoing conversation with himself, and with the world.
