Curator: John La Farge painted this watercolor, "Buttresses of the First Christian Church, and Siga's Tomb at Sapapali, Samoa," during his travels. The work is undated. Editor: The initial impression is overwhelmingly tranquil, a serene composition dominated by soft blues and greens. Curator: La Farge's brushstrokes are quite loose. Note how the forms of the trees and foliage are suggested rather than precisely defined. The materiality of the watercolor itself contributes to the effect. Editor: The island, with its modest vegetation, whispers of isolation. Tombs often represent the boundary between worlds, and its proximity to the church could indicate an attempt to bridge belief systems. Curator: Interesting point. The visual harmony, however, may stem from the careful balance of light and shadow, and the spatial relationships between the land masses and the water. Editor: Perhaps. Regardless, it's hard not to feel a sense of peace emanating from this understated scene. Curator: Indeed. It's a compelling study in form and feeling.
