Louise Bourgeois made *A million ways to cum* with watercolor and ink on paper. The ethereal quality of watercolor—its blendability, its tendency to bleed into paper—creates a soft, dreamlike effect that I find super compelling. Look at how the gray-blue wash makes up a soft figure with darker pools of color on its surface. The ink lines underneath feel like a map of veins or waterways, like the body is part of the landscape, or maybe *is* the landscape. Then, this splash of dark red juts out, solid and sure. There’s a tiny figure perched on top, like they’re hitching a ride, or taking in the view. Bourgeois’s friend, Joan Miró comes to mind; both artists manage to be incredibly playful and incredibly serious all at once. It’s like they’re reminding us that art, like life, is always open to interpretation, and that’s exactly what makes it so interesting.
