This is Jan Toorop’s sketch of William Degouve de Nuncques, a delicate pencil drawing on a gilded copper plate. In fin-de-siècle Europe, artists sought to capture the shifting anxieties and aesthetic sensibilities of a rapidly changing world. Toorop, straddling Symbolism and early Modernism, often explored themes of identity and representation. This portrait is a window into the artistic circles of the time, depicting a fellow artist within what seems like a halo of gold. The choice of a gilded surface complicates the portrait, and enhances the ethereal quality, imbuing the sitter with a sense of importance. Consider how artists in this period, freed from traditional constraints, experimented with new ways of portraying themselves and their peers, reflecting a broader societal questioning of established norms. This sketch, though simple, invites us to reflect on the artist's gaze and the very act of portraying another.
