This page is a transfer of a chalk drawing, made by Isaac Israels, sometime in his life, and it's now at the Rijksmuseum. It's so subtle, almost like a ghost of an image, right? I think of process a lot when I look at art; the way things are made is part of what they mean. The texture here is everything. The way the chalk has been rubbed and lifted, leaving this hazy, almost atmospheric residue. Look closely, you can see the delicate pressure of the artist's hand, the way the pigment clings to the paper. It's not about the finished product, it's about the act of drawing, the feeling of the chalk on the paper, the smudging and blurring. I think about Cy Twombly when I see this kind of mark making, this embrace of imperfection and ephemerality. Art is a conversation, a series of echoes and whispers across time. It's about the questions, not the answers.
