Gustave Loiseau made this painting, The Garden, with oil on canvas. I love the mosaic-like touch, each dab a little world of its own. Up close, you can see how Loiseau built up the image with these tiny, almost frantic strokes. It’s like he’s trying to catch the light as it flickers through the leaves. Look at the way he layers greens and yellows in the foreground – it’s a thick impasto, giving the grass a real, tangible presence. Then, he uses the same kind of staccato marks to capture the buildings in the background. It feels like he was influenced by Pissarro’s urban scenes, but Loiseau definitely has his own quirky take on it.
