Johan Antonie de Jonge made this drawing of two horses with what looks like charcoal. I can almost feel him dragging that charcoal across the page! You know, there's something so immediate and raw about a drawing like this. You can see the artist working through the image, trying to capture the weight and the power of these animals. I imagine him, squinting, quickly trying to get down the essence of the scene before the light changes or the horses move. Look at how he uses these heavy, dark lines to define the forms, there's a real sense of mass and volume. It reminds me a bit of some of the quick sketches that Delacroix made of animals. Artists are always looking, always learning from each other, across time. This drawing feels like a conversation across generations. And, well, isn't that what art is all about?
