Reijer Stolk made this study of a standing nude, seen from the back, using graphite and red chalk. I love how the composition emerges from a mass of grey and brown marks, a flurry of activity and repeated reworking of lines. I imagine him stepping back, squinting, making constant adjustments. You can feel the artist searching here, trying to define a solid form out of thin air. The body has a delicate pink tone, yet is surrounded by dark, almost claustrophobic lines, like a cage or shadowy landscape. I’m reminded of other artists, like Paula Modersohn-Becker, who were similarly interested in depicting the female nude in new and emotionally resonant ways. The artist’s hand, full of probing, creates an intimacy, even a vulnerability, that reminds us of the human desire to see and understand the world around us. It’s a beautiful reminder that artists are always in conversation with each other, across time and space, inspiring new ways of seeing and feeling.
