Agnes Martin made this delicate, untitled grid using watercolor and graphite on paper. Can you imagine her in the studio, gently layering these washes of pale, fleshy tones? I can relate – when I’m painting, I’m trying to feel my way through. The grid is so faint, so human. The imperfections show the artist's hand, and create a kind of subtle rhythm. It’s like she’s whispering, not shouting. There's such a bravery in its quietness. It makes me think of other painters like Hilma af Klint or Emma Kunz, women who were also searching for something beyond the surface of things. It’s all connected, this conversation between artists across time. Each mark is a question, and each painting a new way of seeing and experiencing the world.
