Yoko d'Holbachie painted "Endless Circle of Transmigration" using what appears to be oil on canvas. In this work, d'Holbachie employs traditional fine art techniques. The smooth blending of pigments, resulting in gradients of color and tone, suggests meticulous layering of paint. This illusionistic approach is labor intensive. It's a kind of careful handcraft, albeit one that is usually placed high on the artistic hierarchy. The result here is an uncanny figure, at once cute and unsettling, adorned with skulls and eyeballs and positioned within a kind of metaphysical mandala. Through expert control of their medium, the artist has given form to a bizarre vision. Ultimately, the painting encourages us to think beyond conventional categories of craft and fine art. The artist leverages established techniques of painting to give physical form to a contemporary mythology.
