"Christ et Pouvres" is a moving print by Georges Rouault. Rouault lived through two World Wars. He witnessed profound social changes and the rise of industrialization, so his work often reflects deep empathy for the marginalized. This piece, part of his "Passion" series, intertwines religious iconography with the plight of the poor. Rouault uses stark lines and heavy contours, reminiscent of stained glass, to depict Christ surrounded by the impoverished. The figures are rendered with raw emotion, their faces etched with suffering, their bodies slumped in dejection. Rouault’s choice to portray Christ amidst poverty challenges traditional representations of divinity, instead emphasizing solidarity with the downtrodden. Rouault once said, "If I did not believe, it would be impossible for me to work." Through this deeply personal lens, Rouault invites us to confront uncomfortable truths about social inequality and spiritual responsibility. He makes us consider how faith can inspire compassion and action in a world marred by injustice.
