This is ‘Belt Tape’ by Dong, and its medium is, quite simply, tape. At first glance, one is struck by the starkness of its black and white contrast, and the almost hypnotic rhythm established by the repetition of floral motifs. The tape partially unfurls, displaying a sequence of carefully arranged patterns, poised between utility and aesthetic expression. This creates a tension, asking us to consider the semiotic codes embedded in everyday objects and consider how this destabilises our conventional understanding of value. These patterns operate within a visual language. They remind us that even the most mundane objects can carry complex cultural meanings. This humble material, elevated to art, challenges our perception and prompts us to reconsider its potential for encoding meaning.
