Drie voorstellingen 1809 - 1869

Alexander Cranendoncq created this wood block, titled "Drie voorstellingen," in the Netherlands sometime in the first half of the 19th century. The block presents three interior scenes that invite us to imagine the lives of the Dutch middle class at the time. In each scene, the setting and arrangement of figures tell a story. On the left, we see a domestic interior with a mother tending to her children, perhaps illustrating the virtues of domesticity. The central panel shows a man seated at a table covered with papers, suggesting intellectual pursuits. The final scene may depict a family gathering, perhaps celebrating a special occasion.
