Genevieve Naylor made this photograph, showing off Carolyn Schnurer’s suits, with a camera, and probably some lights and a darkroom too, of course. The composition feels classic, almost like a stage set. Look at how the models are posed against the rocks, almost sculptural. There's a wonderful sense of balance, and it’s all in black and white, which flattens the image, emphasizing shapes and tones. I keep coming back to the texture of the rock. Naylor captured every little nook and cranny, making it almost as interesting as the models themselves. It’s a conversation between smooth skin and rough stone. The light catches the edges, making the rock look almost alive. Fashion photography is so often about perfection, but there’s a realness here, a sense of place and time. It reminds me a bit of some of Lisette Model's street photography – that same eye for the everyday, turned into something special. Ultimately, it's a reminder that beauty can be found in the unexpected, and that art is as much about seeing as it is about showing.
