This postcard to Philip Zilcken, made in 1911 by Arij Prins, has got me thinking. Look at the pale green ink and the crisp sans-serif font of the word "Briefkaart," which is Dutch for postcard, right there in the center. What was Prins thinking as he wrote? I imagine he was looking out a window, maybe at the light shifting across the buildings, or lost in thought, letting his pen flow freely. The script, with its looping and swooping lines, feels so personal and direct. Then the stamp, placed with such intentionality, adds another layer of texture and depth. You can see how an artist like Prins creates a conversation across time. I see echos of that playful yet rigorous approach in my own work. And, I reckon, we are all in an ongoing exchange of ideas. We inspire one another, riffing on the past and present, embracing the ambiguity and uncertainty that allows for multiple readings.
