These various furniture hardware pieces were made by Henry Kellam Hancock in the mid-19th century. Observe the lion's head. Since ancient times, the lion has been a symbol of strength and courage, often associated with royalty and divine power. We can find it throughout history, from the gates of Mycenae to the thrones of kings. This symbol transcends time, evoking power. It is a powerful psychological symbol that taps into our primal associations with the animal kingdom. But, consider the palmette motif, too. Its origins are rooted in ancient Egyptian and Greek art, representing rebirth, growth, and the Tree of Life. Notice how it’s stylized and repeated, connecting us to nature. Its presence triggers a sense of continuity, a deep-seated connection with ancestral memories and long-lost cultural practices. As cultural symbols, these motifs resonate through time, reminding us of the echoes of our shared human experience.
